Account of an incident relative to the declaration of war with Great Britain, 1858 June 28.

Handwritten account (2 p.) concerns differences between President James Madison and a group of U.S. Congressmen (including Langdon Cheves, William Lowndes, and John C. Calhoun) over declaring war on England or France in 1812, and the events which led up to America's declaration of war against England. The account was related by Langdon Cheves to William Ford DeSaussure, who related it to John Boone DeSaussure.

Langdon Cheves (September 17, 1776 – June 26, 1857) was an American politician, lawyer and businessman from South Carolina. He was a U. S.
